What to Wear | Shades of Grey

What to Wear | Shades of Grey

Think "monochrome" and you typically think, "safe" and "boring". But this look is all about mixing textures and shades to pull off a monochromatic look that is anything but! The result: a polished, pulled-together outfit that can go from casual Friday at the office to the street, to a house party.

This look mixes shades of grey in a chunky knit with the simple, clean lines of a high waisted jean and a bold, cut-out chrome bootie.

This trendy mock turtleneck is really a blanket that passes as socially acceptable to wear in public. From the edged ribbing of the neckline and cuffs, to the cable knit vertical lines defining the midsection, to the clean knit of the sleeves, this sweater is anything but basic. And yet, it's also definitely a staple item! I'm loving the wide, boxy cut and the way it hangs--slightly belled in the front while hugging the back.

With all the details of the sweater, the bold grey wash of this jean is the perfect balance. Clean, structured lines and all-over color pull this look together with a fun twist that makes you start to rethink monochrome!

Lastly, this look finishes with my favorite fall booties, these metallic cut-outs. I love these shoes on their own--comfortable, durable, and of course, fun and interesting. But, paired with this sweater and jeans--who even needs other accessories?! These say it all. At first blush, the chrome hue is surprising, but it's what makes this monochrome outfit work! The play on texture and hue adds yet another interesting dimension. "Basic" gets a double take that winks, pay attention!

So, take a second look at your closet and see what patterns and textures you can play with to  take your one-dimensional look to the next level. And if you have them, may I suggest you try shades of grey! Let me know how you mix and match to pull it off!
